Mileage allowance calculator: 45p and 25p per mile (UK)
Work out how much you can claim for business journeys using HMRC's approved mileage rates, and how much tax it saves you.
HMRC mileage rates
| Vehicle | First 10,000 miles | After 10,000 miles |
|---|---|---|
| Cars and vans | 45p | 25p |
| Motorcycles | 24p | 24p |
| Bicycles | 20p | 20p |
The 10,000 mile threshold resets every tax year on 6 April. Keep a record of each journey: the date, where you went, why, and the miles.
Common questions
What is the HMRC mileage rate for vans?
If you use simplified expenses, you can claim 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year and 25p a mile after that. The same rates apply to cars.
Can I claim fuel as well as mileage?
No. The mileage rate already covers fuel, insurance, servicing, repairs and wear and tear. You can still claim parking, tolls and congestion charges on top.
Which journeys count as business miles?
Trips to customers' jobs, to suppliers and builders' merchants, and between jobs all count. Your normal commute to a permanent workplace doesn't. If you work from home and travel to different sites, most of those journeys are business miles.
Mileage allowance or actual costs: which is better?
Mileage is simpler and often better for cheaper or older vans. Claiming actual costs can be better for an expensive new van, because you can also claim capital allowances. Once you use one method for a vehicle, you usually have to stick with it.
